A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE – CASCAIS SURROUNDINGS
This walk takes us on an interesting route around the lesser-known parts of the outlying area of Cascais. The tour starts in the village of Murches at the old village chapel. Although we are only 4km from the cosmopolitan resort of Cascais, this is another world.
Walking through the Penhas de Marmeleira park and down the valley to the “haunted house”, we will be collected and taken back to Murches for a coffee stop before making our way to the little-known Roman ruins at Casais Velho, only 5 minutes away.
Then comes a wonderful walk across the Cresmina Sand Dunes by Guincho beach. At the 2014 Berlin Tourism Fair the "VISION Innovation for Sustainable Tourism Awards 2014" was awarded to Cascais from 1000 candidates. The award was attributed in recognition of the work carried out from 2010 at the Interpretation Centre of the Cresmina Dunes and Pisão Natural Park which has recuperated 90 hectares within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.
After driving along the rugged coast road, there will be a stop at the Fort São Jorge of Oitavos, built to defend the oceanic gateway into Lisbon against a possible Spanish invasion in 1640.
The tour ends either in the centre of Cascais from where you have been collected or returns to the centre of Murches where you have left your car.
DURATION: 3-4 hours, depending on coffee stops, photograph stops and the pace of the slowest walker.
COST: €120 per private tour.
