CASCAIS WALKING TOUR
In 1870, The Portuguese Royal Family came to Cascais for the summer and changed the history of this quiet fishing village forever. The Court followed and between 1870 and 1920, the noble families built their own summer holiday homes. Our route will take us past many of these architectural gems.
We meet at the beginning of the Promenade Walk near the Hotel Albatross where the tour starts, walk through the centre of town and into the residential part of Cascais. Along the way, the story of Cascais will unfold. There will be an opportunity for a coffee and comfort stop at the Paula Rego Art Gallery, after which we stroll through the park towards the Guincho road. Turning back towards Cascais, we pass by the Cultural Centre, the Castro Guimarães House & Museum and back towards the centre of town.
Along the way, history will come alive. From the Romans to the Moors, from the English troops under Sir Francis Drake to the French troops under General Junot, from the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to King Humberto II of Italy - Cascais has seen many people from many lands pass through.
· Why is Cascais called Cascais?
· Why are there statues of the 8th , the 33rd. and the 34th kings of Portugal in the centre of Cascais?
· Why is there a statue of a mermaid overlooking the Fishermen’s Beach?
Stories and history intermingle as we stroll through the town and out towards the Guincho road through the Gandarinha Park.
All will be revealed as we make a circular tour around this very special town.
DURATION: 3-4 hours, depending on coffee stops, photograph stops and the pace of the slowest walker.
COST: €120 per private tour. (Entrance fees not included)
