The Magical Mystery Tour is a day tour with a difference.

The tour appeals to your senses and imagination because we shall be seeing people and places in our mind’s eye..

Our first stop is The Buddha Eden Garden of Peace, the largest oriental garden in Europe, which was created as a reaction to the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan. Afghanistan in 2001 by the Taliban. A sense of quiet and peace pervades the gardens and to see the huge buddhas, pagodas and over 700 copies of the Terracotta Warriors is breathtaking, to say the least.

The next stop is Eburobrittium, the remains of a busy Roman town 2000 years ago. Here you can see what life would have been like at the time of Julius Caesar in this busy port, now miles away from the coast. The temple lies beneath the motorway but the excavated Roman baths are one of the best examples of remains in Portugal.

Moving towards Obidos, the prettiest medieval village in Portugal, there will be time to wander through the narrow streets, have a bite to eat, taste the famous cherry brandy served in chocolate cups and browse in the fascinating little shops along the main street.

Our next stop will be Sitio, overlooking the fishing port of Nazaré. This is the place of legends. You will hear the story of Dom Fuas de Roupinho whose horse was stopped from falling over the cliff by Our Lady of Nazareth – the hoof marks are still engraved in the stone! Also to be seen is a small wood carving of Our Lady of Nazareth, reputedly carved by her husband Joseph after the baby Jesus was born. How did this come to rest in Nazareth, Portugal?

Finally, the stillness of the Monastery of Alcobaça will focus our imagination on the incredible skills and knowledge of the Cistercian monks 1000 years ago. How did they live their daily lives, what did they eat and drink? What good did they do for the local population? And, of course, no visit to this huge abbey would be complete without hearing the story of the star-crossed lovers, Pedro and Ines. Their desperately sad story can be read in the magnificent carvings of the tombs which face each other across the central nave of this vast, columned building.
