A WALK THROUGH TIME - LISBON´S HISTORY
Our walking tour begins in Commerce Square, by the River Tagus, where the story of one of the deadliest earthquakes in European history will be told.
From there, we will pass under the Triumphal Arch in Rua Augusta and “go underground” to visit 2.500 years of history at the archeological site discovered in the 1990s when the Millennium Bank decided to build an underground car-park.
We then make our way towards Rossio where the rebuilding of Lisbon after 1755 is admirably evident and on to the site of a dark period in Portugal’s history – the Massacre of the Jews and the Portuguese Inquisition.
Continuing to Figueira Square, the Phoenician and Roman influence on life in Olisipo or Felicitas Julia, as Lisbon was then called, will be highlighted.
Continuing our route, the heritage of the Moors is evident before the castle was retaken by the first king of Portugal in 1147.
Making our way through the narrow streets of Lisbon’s traditional Fado District, the Mouraria, towards the castle, we will have a coffee stop and time to enjoy the view from one of the viewpoints over the “Baixa” (downtown Lisbon).
Descending by elevator, we make our way back to Commerce Square and the Lisbon Story Centre which was opened in September 2013. Like a well-illustrated book, the Lisboa Story Centre “transports” visitors on a fascinating journey through time, using a mixture of elaborate sets, multimedia and sensory experiences. The tour finishes at the entrance to the Story Centre where you have the opportunity to visit the centre and go up (by elevator) to the top of the Triumphal Arch which was opened to the public in 2013.
DURATION: 3-4 hours, depending on coffee stops, photograph stops and the pace of the slowest walker.
COST: €120 per private tour. (Entrance fees not included)
BOOKINGS: Eva Sanches. Email: [email protected]. Mobile: (+ 351) 917 300 345.
