After a brief stop to sample the famous Azeitão sponge “tortas” at one of the oldest cafés in town, we head for the hills. Driving through lush, green countryside and ever upwards, we arrive at the spectacular viewpoint overlooking the 16th century Arrabida Monastery. Each further photo stop unfolds stunning vistas to both north and south.
Our tour now takes us through vineyards and small villages until we arrive at the legendary Castle of Palmela where a light lunch will be served. From the castle ramparts there is a panoramic view of the city of Setubal and beyond to the Troia Peninsula, once home to a thriving Roman port.
A visit to a small independent artisan tiles workshop follows, after which we join the “Art, Wine and Passion tour” at the Bacalhôa Winery. This winery surprises with its exclusive glimpse into a small part of the private collection of a self-made millionaire, Joe Berardo. While casks of wine age gently to the sound of music, African Art and Art Deco furniture delights the eye.
From hand-picked grapes to hand-made tiles, from age-old cake recipes to walls steeped in the history of battle between the Moors and the Christian Crusaders, this day trip embodies Portugal’s history and heritage over the past two thousand years.
DURATION: Approx. 8 hours for a day tour.
COST: €250 per tour, not per person. (Entrance fees to the winery included.)
The car can take up to 4 passengers.
For larger groups, talk to Eva about cost.
(Lunch cost extra: €15 - €20 per person)
