- Cabo da Roca (Cape Rock) is the most westerly point of mainland Europe. You can even obtain a certificate from the Tourism Office proving you have been there! On returning from Cabo da Roca towards Sintra, there will be a coffee/lunch stop at the wonderfully quirky Bar do Moinho (The Windmill). I promise - you will be impressed both by the views and by the interior decoration.
- Palacio da Vila (town palace) is the oldest medieval palace in Portugal. It has an incredible display of tiled walls. The twin chimneys are a distinctive feature and are visible from afar. It is a living vision of Portuguese history as many landmark events took place within its walls.
- Palacio da Pena (Pena Palace) could be a half-day tour in itself if we include the gardens, the chalet of the Countess of Edla and the Moors Castle. Otherwise we limit our visit to the palace itself.
- Convento dos Capuchos (Capuchos Monastery) is something completely different from any monastery you have ever visited. Built into living rock and lined with cork, this was the home to Franciscan monks between 1560 and 1834. This is one of my highly-recommended ”things to see”.
- Quinta da Regaleira (Regaleira House and Park) is one of the most intriguing gardens ever. It was designed around 1900 by an Italian set designer working in the Lisbon theatre. The house and gardens are the result of the vision of an eccentric Portuguese millionaire whose family made their fortune in Brazil selling coffee and precious stones. The gardens are the delight of everyone who is young at heart and has a sense of adventure. Take a torch to find your way through the secret tunnels and wells to the underground lake!
- Monserrate. This palatial villa and gardens were built by Sir Francis Cook in 1858.They show how nature can be enhanced while the feel of a landscape untouched by human hand is maintained. The recent restoration work has brought this abandoned property back to life. Garden lovers will need at least three hours to visit Monserrate – longer if you want to enjoy the coffee shop or have a light lunch in this magnificent setting.
